EPDM vs Bitumen: Why EPDM is the smart choice for every roof
For many years, bitumen has been the standard roofing material. However, more and more professionals are switching to EPDM—and for good reason. EPDM offers a longer service life, safer installation and lower maintenance costs. Below, we explain the key differences and why EPDM is the most cost-effective choice in the long run.
Longer service life
Bitumen is susceptible to ageing. Exposure to sunlight, temperature fluctuations and moisture causes the material to harden and become brittle over time. After approximately 15 to 18 years, cracks, blistering and leaks can occur, making renovation or complete replacement necessary.
EPDM behaves differently. It remains flexible, does not crack and retains its elasticity even under extreme temperatures ranging from approximately –50°C to +120°C.
As a result, EPDM roofs typically last 50 years or more with minimal maintenance. Install it once and benefit from decades of reliable protection.
Why EPDM offers better long-term value
Although EPDM has a higher initial purchase price than bitumen, this is due to its premium composition, excellent UV and ozone resistance, and exceptionally long lifespan.
When considering the total cost of ownership, EPDM is almost always the more economical choice.
A bitumen roof generally requires replacement after 15–18 years, while an EPDM roof continues to perform for decades. This means lower costs for materials, labour and maintenance over the life of the roof.

Simple and safe installation
Another major difference lies in the installation process.
Bitumen is applied using an open flame. This requires experience, takes more time and increases the risk of fire, particularly on timber substrates or renovation projects.
EPDM, on the other hand, is designed for safe, consistent installation. It can be cold-applied using adhesive or installed using self-adhesive membranes.
This offers several advantages:
No fire risk during installation (helping to avoid additional insurance costs)
Fewer tools required
Faster installation
Because EPDM is available in large, seamless sheets, significantly fewer overlaps are required, reducing potential weak points and the risk of leaks.
This also makes EPDM easier to install around:
dormer windows
rooflights
upstands
pipe penetrations
other roof details
In practice, EPDM roofs can often be installed 30–40% faster than bitumen roofs, mainly because there is no need for torching, multiple layers or cooling times.

A more sustainable and future-proof solution
Bitumen is a petroleum-based product that hardens over time and ultimately has to be discarded.
EPDM, by contrast, is fully recyclable, remains flexible throughout its service life and contributes to energy-efficient, airtight buildings.
Pandser EPDM is Cradle to Cradle Certified® and helps projects comply with BENG requirements and EPB standards for nearly zero-energy buildings.
For companies looking to build more sustainably or comply with modern building regulations, EPDM is therefore the logical choice.
Moisture and airtight construction
Combined with Pandser membranes, tapes and accessories, EPDM forms one complete system for creating a durable, moisture- and airtight building envelope.
